Packers getting good news on the Allan Lazard front

The Green Bay Packers wide receiver room remains lacking, so getting good news about Allen Lazard for 2022 is something they needed in a big way.

Now that Davante Adams has taken up residency in Las Vegas, it’s no secret that the Green Bay Packers wide receiver room is in a much different, much less appealing position than it was last year. As such, the last thing they could afford was to not have one of their more proven commodities such as Allen Lazard on the roster for the 2022 season.

As a restricted free agent, the Packers and Lazard hadn’t gotten a deal done in early June and, though there wasn’t much drama, that was still enough of a concern for fans to keep a close eye on the situation.

That will no longer be the case, though. On Monday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Green Bay and the wide receiver reached a tender agreement for a one-year deal for just under $4 million. Lazard then took to Twitter to confirm the news and get ready to run it back.

Florio noted that Lazard’s decision to wait until June 13 seems a bit strategic. Doing so after OTAs and minicamps allowed him to not participate in those workouts while doing so before the upcoming deadline for RFAs gave him a substantially higher salary for the 2022 season.

The on-field implications are far more important, though. Aaron Rodgers has long been a player who has thrived when he has familiarity with weapons. With Adams and Marquez Valdez-Scantling now gone, Lazard is the second-most senior member of the wide receiver corps in Green Bay behind only Randall Cobb. That could be valuable as the Packers try to develop a hierarchy with him, Sammy Watkins, Amari Rodgers and Christian Watson.

That being said, Lazard will need to develop more consistency to step up for the Packers this season to build off a career-high 513 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Regardless, for an offense that is trying to reshape itself, keeping Lazard happy and in the building is ultimately good news no matter how you slice it.
