Bears quarterback Justin Fields admitted last year’s team under Matt Nagy didn’t have good culture as Chicago tries to “re-culture” with Matt Eberflus.

Justin Fields was thrown into the fire last year as a rookie quarterback leading the Bears.

As an individual, the hope is for the game to slow down for the young passer, allowing him to come into his own in Year 2.

As a team leader, the challenge is new as well since Fields has to transition to life under a new head coach.

It sounds so far, so good with Fields and Matt Eberflus. As for former head coach Matt Nagy, his leadership ability is taking some hits.

Justin Fields shades Matt Nagy regime, praises new ‘culture’

Fields may not have meant to take a shot at Nagy, but it sure felt like he took one by talking about the changes in culture he’s working on with Eberflus and the news staff.

“We’re kinda just trying to re-culture or getting the culture in the building. I don’t think our culture was the best culture last year,” Fields said.

Things didn’t exactly play out well for Nagy in his final year with the Bears. The team went 6-11 and the head coach lost his job.

Culture can mean a lot of things, whether togetherness in the locker room or an overall commitment to excellence. It starts with the head coach but also has to stretch down to the staff, the quarterback and each player down to the guys on the practice squad.

It’s up to Eberflus to continue to develop Fields as well as the culture on the team as a whole. If he doesn’t, he’ll suffer the same fate as a predecessor.
